Conservation of the endangered endemic Boswellia trees on Socotra Island (Yemen)
Protecting 11 endemic Boswellia taxa and other critically threatened tree species on Socotra — coordinated by Mendel University in Brno with an international expert team.
About the project

Project is supported by Franklinia Foundation since 2020.
Fondation Franklinia is a private foundation established in 2005 under Swiss law. It provides grants to support nature conservation projects. Its objective is to preserve threatened tree species throughout the world and improve their conservation status. Today, Foundation supports primarily in situ conservation actions of globally threatened tree species around the world, species listed as Critically Endangered, Endangered and Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. To ensure that all tree species are assigned a threat category, the foundation also supports the global assessment of all 60’000+ tree species (Global Tree Assessment), an initiative led by Botanic Gardens Conservation International and the Global Tree Specialist Group of the IUCN Species Survival Commission.

Aim
The main goal of the project is the conservation of the endemic Boswellia species and other selected the most endangered tree species occurring on Socotra Archipelago. Frankincense trees have not only natural value as umbrella species of savannah woodland on the island, but also a significant cultural value through the long history of olibanum harvesting and trade.
